Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is a premier, public central research university located in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was originally established by the legendary social reformer and statesman Sir Syed Ahmad Khan as the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental (MAO) College in 1875, before transitioning into a full-fledged central university in 1920 following the Aligarh Muslim University Act.
